Coble family's partisanship issues
Republican incumbent Howard Coble (right), who represents North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District in the US House, debated Democratic challenger Teresa Sue Bratton today at a luncheon hosted by the League of Women Voters at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro.
Both candidates tried to make the case that they were comfortable reaching across the aisle by telling stories about political differences within their families.
“I gave the eulogy at my mama’s brother’s funeral at Coble’s Lutheran Church earlier this year," Coble recounted, "and I said to his son after we adjourned: ‘I believe your daddy voted for me reluctantly.’ He said, ‘Howard, I hate to tell you that, but he never voted for you.’”

I share my opponent's distaste for partisan politics. If I am elected, I will work across the aisle to get things done. As I said in my closing statement, I pride myself on taking a close look at all the evidence surrounding an issue and on listening to people to understand where they are coming from. This is how I make decisions as a physician that are in my patients' best interests, and it is how I will make decisions in my constituents' best interests as a member of Congress.
More often than not, my opponent follows the Republican party line, and he tends to vote based on his gut reaction rather than a thorough examination of an issue's merits. The Sixth District needs a Representative who does her homework and puts serious thought into each decision, and that is the change I will bring to Washington.
