My mom learned yesterday that she will remain employed with her mental health service agency in Illinois, but will be reassigned to a job working with homeless people. As a result of the state legislature's budget decision on Tuesday, seven of the 18 employees in my mom's division were laid off. My mom was next in line to lose her job due to her relative lack of seniority.
This scenario is playing out all over the country this week. I don't think we know the full implications yet of the vast numbers of people thrown onto the unemployment rolls, and for the clients who will be without services.
