Gifted Imports
Maria Ganim opened Gifted Imports in a stall previously occupied by Cricket at Super G Mart in the Fanta City international market on West Market Street in Greensboro on Dec. 5. Ganim carries scarves, hair accessories and other discretionary-spending items. She had planned to sell her wares at flea markets, but the owner of Super G Market, where she frequently shops for groceries, suggested she try her luck at a permanent location. The owner has had a difficult time keeping long-term tenants and offered Ganim month-to-month leasing so that she can enter the market on a trial basis without committing significant spending.
My Asia English Language School
My Asia English Language School is scheduled to open at the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship in Greensboro on Jan. 9. Partner John Ricci said despite the name, the school is open to any foreign national students who want to learn English.
The Triad’s universities and colleges continue to attract international students, and Ricci said budget cutbacks by educational institutions in the public have helped drive a demand for private instruction services like My Asia.
“We primarily will be serving exchange students on foreign visas,” Ricci said, “people anywhere from 16 to 18 years old. Some of them are going to try gain entrance to US colleges and universities, and need to build up their proficiency in English. There will be other students who are here on work visas.”
Ricci said demand for English-language instruction far outstrips supply in the Triad.
“Right now most of the similar type schools are located in California, Texas, New York, Massachusetts and Florida,” he said. “North Carolina is located at the bottom of the list, so we feel there’s a need there.”
