Part of the task of the panel discussion at A&T on Thursday (previously reported here, here and here) was to invite black leaders to talk about how they see the civil rights movement going forward. The wide-ranging discussion demonstrated just how little consensus there is on that question.

Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College, took a crack at it, suggesting that the key challenge of overcoming gaps in life outcomes between whites and blacks lies in the realm of economics.

"It's real sexy to get on the next person who got beaten by the police," she said. "They will do that; it's just like it's in their DNA. And so then we have a protest. But why can't we have a protest around economic justice issues and economic parity issues?"

SIDE NOTE: The annual civil rights commemorative gala at the Koury Convention center has been postponed.
