Greensboro council votes to allow speakers at beginning of meeting

The Greensboro City Council votes 5-4 to restore speakers from the floor to its old 5:30-6 p.m. time slot, with anyone else who wishes to speak on non-agenda meetings being allowed to do so at the end of the meeting.

Ayes: Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan, at-large Councilman Robbie Perkins, at-large Councilman Danny Thompson, District 1 Councilwoman Dianne Bellamy-Small and District 2 Councilman Jim Kee

Noes: Mayor Bill Knight, District 3 Councilman Zack Matheny, District 4 Councilwoman Mary Rakestraw and District 5 Councilwoman Trudy Wade

UPDATE: Council votes unanimously to authorize City Manager Rashad Young to form a team and move forward with an application to land the Google Fiber project and to spend up to $50,000. If the manager chose to spend the money, he is required to inform the council that he is doing so, identify the funding source and describe how the money is being spent.

A lighthearted moment: Councilwoman Bellamy-Small recommends to Mayor Knight that Matheny and Thompson, who have been squabbling lately, lead the effort together.

Knight responds that he's afraid to appoint anybody, considering the controversy surrounding the appointment process at the beginning of his term.
