Charges of corruption put GPD under scutiny

“The Greensboro Police Department is deeply embroiled in a culture of corruption and a pattern of unequal application of the laws,” NC NAACP President William J. Barber II told NC Attorney General Roy Cooper, US Sen. Kay Hagan and US Rep. Mel Watt in a letter earlier this month. “These members of the community, in Greensboro, believe that the Greensboro Police Department is out of control.”

Weekly investigated the claims of corruption and found a conviction rate in arrests of a group called the Latin Kings that one local lawyer characterized as evidence of "extreme inefficiency and poor judgment, if not intentional targeting," as well as information calling into question whether the department's disciplinary actions towards Officer AJ Blake reflect a harsh double standard intended to silence a whistle-blower.
