Ride of Silence — a memorial ride
In Greensboro this Wednesday, May 19th, over 300 cyclists participated in the annual Ride of Silence. This is a memorial ride to honor the memory of those killed and injured while cycling. All over the country, cyclists "let the silence roar."
I participated to honor the memory of David Sherman, who was killed last October by a allegedly drunk and unlicensed driver just north of Greensboro. More avid bikers than myself knew him personally. Still, the tragedy struck home, and gave me the impenitence to act.
The ride itself was a solumn and slow 8-mile ride, during which none of the hundreds of us spoke a single word. The only sounds in the pack were gears shifting and pedals turning. Reactions on pedestrians, motorists, or folks on their porches, varied from benign indifference to annoyance to joy.
Through the hour-long ride, perhaps a few spectators thought a bit more about how many cyclists ride in the Triad, or will consider being a bit more careful next time getting behind the wheel — a lesson we can all remember.
I was personally happy to see local media present. Fox 8 produced a short piece which shows video and gives more info HERE.
