ReCycles goes to college

Merritt White, owner of the ReCycles bicycle shop on Spring Garden Street in Greensboro, plans to open a new satellite location on the campus of Guilford College in the next couple weeks. The new location at Shore Hall will focus on repairs and maintenance first, and new bicycle sales second.

The number of retail outlets for bicycles has steadily increased in Greensboro, and White sees more opportunity than competition.

“There’s a lot of corporate shops in Greensboro, with REI, with Trek coming into Greensboro,” White said. “I’ve been telling myself: ‘Let them sell the bikes, and we’ll service them.’”

Greensboro has a history of student-run bicycle cooperatives set up for the purpose of maintaining bicycles, and retail shops have always sprung up near college campuses, but White thinks ReCycles might be the first for-profit bike shop actually located on campus.
