Erica Dunton, a writer, producer and film director with strong North Carolina ties, won the Best of NEXT! Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for her independent film, to.get.her. The film was shot in Wilmington last year. Dunton, whose directorial credits include five feature films and an episode of the Wilmington-based television show, “One Tree Hill,” premiered her film at Sundance on Jan. 21.

“I thought you got a heads up if you were going to win,” Dunton said during the Jan. 29 awards ceremony in Park City, Utah. “So I was at the back waiting for the bar to open. I would have worn something nicer. Sorry, mum.”

“I had no idea I was making such a controversial and divisive film,” Dunton continued. “I hope more teenage girls and their mothers get a chance to see it.”

The film tells the story of five teenage girls who make a secret pact to embark on a “night of no consequences” at a beach resort.

During the Jan. 21 premiere of to.get.her, Dunton, who currently resides in Los Angeles, said Wilmington is an ideal training ground for young directors.

“I think Wilmington for me was a place to learn and I could never have made this film anywhere else because my last films I worked with the same crew and pretty much the same cast,” Dunton said. “[Local crew members] are ready to work and they’re ready to help you believe in something if they believe in it. It’s been my schooling and I would love to make more films there.”
