Composition of farmers market review committee questioned

David Craft, who is seeking to manage and operate the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market as a nonprofit, questions the composition of a proposal review committee in an e-mail message to Assistant City Manager Denise Turner today.

Craft asks whether Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan and Councilman Zack Matheny will be able to appoint two or three members to the committee, considering that Councilwoman Mary Rakestraw appointed four members.

"Our wish is to see impartial and qualified persons serve," Craft said.

Turner told me today there are no restrictions on how many individuals council members may appoint to the committee, but said that at a certain point it might end up being too big to effectively carry out its duties.

Craft also said in his e-mail that Jace Ralls, one of Rakestraw's appointees was being replaced based on a conflict of interest "presented by his daughter working for a RFP proposer."

Turner said that is not the case.

"Council has not directed us to remove anyone from the committee," she said. "Mr. Ralls is a member."
