If White Sox skipper Ozzie Guillen has his way, the Winston-Salem Dash may soon be looking for a new pitching coach. After yet another blow-up by the putrid Pale Hose bullpen, this time against the sub-mediocre Oakland Athletics' offense, Guillen suggested looking to the team's all-time saves leader to close out games.
Now, Thigpen hasn't thrown a major league pitch since back problems derailed him in 1994, and his last attempt to break back into the big league via the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks fell short in 1996. With Herschel Walker teasing a return to the NFL, he wouldn't be the only ancient athlete on the comeback trail. Given that he only threw 568 innings in his career, is it possible that the last of the great long-relief closers has something in the tank? Highly unlikely. But unlike current Sox closer Matt Thornton, who can't get anyone out, it'd be a lot more fun watching ol' Bobby try.
