The John Coltrane Jazz Workshop for Students

"The John Coltrane Jazz Workshop is from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., July 28 – 31, 2014, and will be located at Penn-Griffin School for the Arts on E. Washington Drive in High Point. The workshop is for rising 7th through 12th grade musicians with at least one year of experience. The registration fee for the workshop is only $100 (partial and full scholarships are available). Students will receive a complimentary midmorning snack each day and a logo t-shirt.

During the workshop, students will learn jazz history, jazz theory, and will be taught by educators and performers who are highly regarded as jazz specialists. The faculty for the workshop will be led by Wally West, Executive Director of the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. The faculty for the workshop includes musicians who teach and perform throughout the state.

On Thursday evening, July 31, following the completion of the workshop, the students will play before an audience at a free jazz concert for the community. This concert will be held at Penn-Griffin where the students will perform on the stage of the school that Coltrane attended in his youth. The students and faculty of the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop will wear the t-shirts given to them during the workshop so that they look and perform as an ensemble.

If you play an instrument and enjoy making music, then this workshop is for you! Just fill out the registration form (available online at www.HighPointArts.org) and mail before June 30, 2014. If you have any questions, contact Travis Compton at 889-2787 ext. 26 or rtcompton@highpointarts.org."
