Problem Oriented Policing Practice Leads to Arrest of Robbery Trio

           

          Three young Greensboro men suspected of committing multiple robberies were taken into police custody late last night after coordinated efforts throughout the Greensboro Police Department provided police with the information to intercept the trio.

Rakeem Barrett, 18, of 3504 Sherbourne Lane, Treshon Lamont Deonte Broadnax, 17, of 1807 Water Street, and Dexter Rashad Vanstory, 18, of 2711 Tuskegee Street, were arrested shortly before midnight on August 21st after they stole a vehicle at gunpoint near 1235 South Eugene Street. A nearby officer saw the stolen vehicle approximately five minutes later on Alamance Church Road and initiated a brief vehicle pursuit. The pursuit ended when the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot at Bingham Street and Peachtree Street. Patrol officers established a perimeter and K9 tracked to the suspects who were then taken into custody without incident.

The teens may have first come to the attention of GPD on August 18after a robbery at the Margate Apartments on East Cone Boulevard. The victim reported that three males stole his vehicle at gunpoint.

Two days later, a robbery with a similar modus operandi was committed by three people on Summit Avenue.

In keeping with the practice of Problem Oriented Policing (a component of Neighborhood Oriented Policing), the two repeat incidents over such a short period of time alerted the department’s crime analysts to take a more detailed look at the incidents. (A pattern is two or more crimes that share at least one commonality.)

The crime analysts released a detailed bulletin about the pattern that contained information to aid patrol officers and detectives in order to disrupt the crime pattern.

Three more robberies on August 19 elevated the crime pattern to a crime series, and provided analysts with more information to assist officers in better deploying resources to identify and catch the offenders.

“Thorough analysis of detailed crime data, additional investigation by detectives, and effectively positioning patrol officers contributed to the arrests of these three young men,” said Capt. Mike Richey, Commander of the Criminal Investigations Division. “This is a good example of how specific roles under NOP help reduce crime.”

All three subjects are charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, 1st Degree Kidnapping, Attempted Armed Robbery, Armed Robbery and two counts each of Conspiracy to Commit Armed Robbery for the robberies on August 21. 

Sufficient evidence has been developed to link Vanstory to the August 18 robbery on Summit Avenue and the two robberies on Hewitt Street on August 19th. He faces additional charges in connection with these three incidents. He is currently confined in the Greensboro Jail Central on a $1 million secure bond.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the crime series. Additional charges are pending for the similar crimes."
