Alicia Graf Mack of Alvin Ailey to come to Greensboro

"Royal Expressions Contemporary Ballet has done it again! Alicia Graf Mack, lead dancer of Alvin Ailey and co-Founder of D(n)a Arts, has submitted a letter of intent to come to Greensboro to create a new work for Royal Expression Contemporary Ballet’s upcoming project, 31. She will be the second top artist to come to Greensboro to visit the company. This past April, Misty Copeland of American Ballet Theatre came for Royal Expressions’ 5 year anniversary celebration. She spoke at a breakfast for NC Dance Professionals, taught master classes, did a lecture, and a book signing.

How does this dance company attract such high profile dancers to our area? Princess Johnson, the
Founding Director, believes it takes a whole lot of faith and simply asking that they take part. When
she asked them why they said yes, both responded, “...because they believe in what I do, and that is
using dance to inspire others.”

Johnson is the visionary behind 31, a choreography collective inspired by Proverbs 31 to uplift and
empower all women. It is her desire to bring women of all races, sizes, and abilities together to
celebrate being women and encourage them to emulate the woman described in Proverbs 31. The
production will be about more than the dance production, as it will also include a workshop for women to attend and discuss Proverbs 31. A portion of the workshop will include everyday women learning a dance to “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan. They will then be invited to dance on stage in front of their families and friends at the production 31, which will feature a new work by Alicia Graf Mack, Princess Johnson, and other local up and coming choreographers.

Local choreographers are invited to submit a new work to be included in this show. The call for
submissions was released on September 4 and the deadline for the application is on January 15, 2015.
Anyone interested in submitting an application will need to contact Princess Johnson at
princess@royalexpressions.org. Details about the workshop will be released at a later date. The show
is expected to premier in the Fall of 2015. Sponsors are currently being sought for this production.

All interested sponsors may contact Princess Johnson at 336-944-6146 or email

princess@royalexpressions.org."
