Letter from former Mayor Yvonne Johnson

Former Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson submitted a handwritten letter to city council this evening:

To Mayor Knight and members of council,

I want council to know that the majority of NE Greensboro residents do not want the landfill to reopen for household waste. We know that you have 5 votes to open the landfill, although some of you in that 5-vote camp stated during the last election that you would not vote to re-open the landfill. One of you promised not to vote to re-open if the community isn't behind an alternative plan.

We, as a committee of the community, appointed by Councilman Kee, have looked at and have been briefed and studied various technologies. At the last meeting the majority of this committee did not want the landfill reopened for municipal waste. There are some of us that welcome tech. and the conversion of waste to energy. However, we do not want the garbage trucks coming through our neighborhoods. If the council will consider looking at additional proposals, alternative truck routes and a commitment not to bury municipal waste and allow the city manager to guide this process, I believe the community would give this serious consideration.

Yvonne Johnson
