Board of Education Forgives Three School Make-Up Days

April 16, 17 and June 16 no longer student days

"The Guilford County Board of Education voted Thursday to forgive three student make-up days, including Wednesday, April 16, Thursday, April 17 and Monday, June 16. The last day of school for students attending traditional schools will now be Friday, June 13.
The three days will now be optional teacher workdays, as will Tuesday, June 17. Since most classified employees do not get paid for days they do not work, the Board requested district staff to investigate the possibility of offering training or other opportunities to those employees.
GCS has been closed 10 days this school year for inclement weather and related issues. Whenever schools are closed, the days of instruction missed are made up according to the inclement weather days listed in each of GCS' school calendars. These days are scheduled and approved by the Guilford County Board of Education for each upcoming school year. GCS had nine inclement-weather days built into the 2013-14 traditional calendar; however, the number of days missed due to inclement weather exceeded the number of days planned.
The graduation schedule for the Class of 2014 will not change. As in years past, if graduation occurs before testing, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction allows school districts to submit a waiver in order to test seniors early.
Administrators at schools following nontraditional calendars will review their makeup days with their regional superintendent and make any changes necessary. All revised calendars will be shared with employees and posted on the GCS website as soon as they are available."
