"Dr. Rose Sackeyfio, associate professor of English at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), has received a $6,000 grant to develop a joint course in partnership with Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi as part of a University of North Carolina system initiative to foster global understanding.
The course, “World Literature and Culture” will be developed in collaboration with Dr. Mohammed Asaddudin, professor and head of the Department of English at Jamia Millia Islamia and will be offered in the spring of 2015. The collaboration is part of WSSU’s goal of expanding opportunities to integrate global issues throughout the curriculum and also will expand collaborations developed through the National Endowment for the Humanities funded project at WSSU that integrates India into the liberal arts curriculum.
The course will explore diversity in the literature and culture of Africa, the African Diaspora, India and South Asia. Using selected literary works and classics in world literature the course will explore the universal aspects of human experience and also highlight the historical and contemporary role of minority serving institutions in the United States and in India.
Jamia Millia Islamia University was founded in 1920 by Muslim leaders as part of the anti-colonial Islamic and pro-independence activism. It has grown to become a comprehensive, progressive university that provides access to formal education particularly for first generation students."A Press Release
