Greensboro Housing Coalition receives $25,000 grant from

the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro

"The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro has awarded Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC) a $25,000 grant.  This grant is a partial match to The Kresge Foundation’s $125,000 grant that was awarded in July, 2015. 

GHC is an advocate for safe, fair and affordable housing for low and moderate income people in Greensboro. The Kresge Foundation partnered with just five non-profits nationwide in December, 2012, to address environmental and housing challenges such as asthma-triggering allergens, fire hazards, substandard insulation, weatherization, structural problems, and neighborhood nuisances such as abandoned buildings.  GHC was one of the five non-profit that was picked by the Kresge Foundation.  Kresge recognized the importance of GHC’s work in Greensboro and added an additional $125,000 to continue GHC’s effort. 

Greensboro Housing Coalition has now undertaken the task of matching Kresge’s $125,000  by July, 2016. “The matching funds will help us serve more people in the community, stated executive director, Brett Byerly.  “GHC and our partners know how crucial this work is in the health of children and families,” Byerly continued, “mold, pests, lead paint and other safety hazards put children at risk everyday here in Greensboro.  The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro has taken the lead in matching funding and we hope that other folks will realize the importance of our “Healthy Homes” work.”

Many low income tenants do not realize their rights or don’t know how to advocate for themselves when they are living in substandard housing.  Part of GHC’s mission is educate both the tenant and the landlord on both parties’ rights and responsibilities.  GHC’s Healthy Homes Team are headed by a Public Health Educator, the entire team is committed to the holistic needs of the children and familes of our community.  To learn more about GHC or to donate to the matching funds visit: www.greensborohousingcoalition.com"

Greensboro Housing Coalition receives $20,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro

"At the Women to Women Celebration Luncheon on October 19th Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC) was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.  This grant will fund GHC’s ongoing program that keeps families together when housing becomes an issue. This program is designed to help families that are facing possible foster care placement of their children because of parental homelessness. GHC receives clients through referrals from the Department of Social Services.

Working in partnership with Child Protective Services GHC helps the client family obtain affordable housing.

Housing Summit 2015 to Focus on Housing Choices for Healthy Aging

"The 16th annual Housing Summit, sponsored by the Greensboro Housing Coalition (GHC) in conjunction with Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the City of Greensboro, will focus on the challenges of providing safe, healthy and affordable housing options for our community with a focus on the aging population. We are please to announce the keynote speaker for Housing Summit 2015 will be Kathy Sykes, currently the Senior Advisor for Aging and Sustainability at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An advocate for smart growth and for active aging, Kathy chaired a committee comprised of federal agencies and national aging and public health organizations that developed the award program, Building Healthy Communities for Active Aging, to recognize community excellence in the built environment and promotion of active aging.

Michelle Gethers-Clark, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Greensboro, will be the Master of Ceremonies throughout the conference, which includes discussions led by experienced and knowledgeable professionals in addition to eight different workshop sessions for attendees to choose from. Four simultaneous workshops will be held in the morning and another four workshops will be offered in the afternoon in an effort to cover the spectrum of housing issues facing diverse populations in our community, especially seniors. Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan and Guilford County Commissioner Ray Trapp will feature as moderators in panel discussions on current challenges and potential solutions to local housing choices that relate to age, income, and level of independence.

“Housing Summit 2015 will give attendees the latest information and a general idea of how local organizations are collaborating to meet housing needs of seniors and all populations living in Greensboro and Guilford County,” says Brett Byerly, Executive Director of the Greensboro Housing Coalition. “Participants will get to hear from current federal and local officials, leading experts in the field of housing, and join discussions with peers and agencies that interest them.  These will hopefully provide the opportunities for people to network and even launch new ideas and partnerships that will contribute to and enhance Greensboro’s future.”

Location and Event Details: Housing Summit 2015 will be held February 25, 8:30-3:00, at George K’s Event Center, 2108 Cedar Fork Road in Greensboro. Registration is open to all and lunch will be provided. Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro is providing scholarships for community residents with limited income.
