Town Mountain plays Kernersville’s Ciener Botanical Garden Sept. 22

"After the runaway success of Paul J. Ciener Bontanical Garden’s first ticketed concert with Mipso last fall, the non-profit is pleased to announce Asheville’s Town Mountain will play a concert on the lawn at the Garden, Thursday, September 22.


Town Mountain describe themselves as a “hard-drivin’ Carolina string band”. The 2013 winners of IBMA Momentum Awards for Performance Band and Vocalist of the Year (Robert Greer), Town Mountain has earned raves for their hard-driving sound, their in-house songwriting and the honky-tonk edge that permeates their exhilarating live performances, whether in a packed club or at a sold-out festival. Just as a gumbo recipe starts with the "holy trinity" of staples (onions, bell peppers and celery), and can contain a wide variety of additional ingredients and inspiration, the hearty base of Town Mountain's music is the bluegrass triumvirate of Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. It's what else goes into the mix that brings it all to life both on stage and on record and reflects the group's wide-ranging influences – from the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia to the honest, vintage country of Willie, Waylon and Merle.

“We were thrilled at last year’s concert and look forward to an even greater event this year.  Non-gardening events allow us to broaden our reach and build awareness across all areas of the Triad to the wonderful cultural treasure that exists here at Ciener Botanical” says the Garden’s Executive Director John Whisnant.

“We’re building community and commerce, in the heart of North Carolina. Town Mountain is a big name, but I’d love to see us get to the point where patrons say “I’d never heard of the band but I knew if it was at Ciener Botanical Garden it would be good” says event co-producer Tess Mangum Ocaña, of Sonic Pie Productions.

The concert, presented by Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden and Sonic Pie Productions is rain or shine with limited tent coverage. Bring a chair or blanket but no coolers. Paul J Ciener Botanical Garden to host “Breakfast with Washington” on June 2

 

To commemorate the 225th anniversary of President Washington’s stop in Kernersville at Dobson’s Tavern for breakfast, the Paul J Ciener Botanical Garden will host “Breakfast with Washington” on June 2nd at 7:30 am.

On June 2nd 1791, President George Washington stopped at Dobson’s Tavern in Kernersville for breakfast.  He left Old Salem at 4 am and reached Kernersville at approximately 8 am.   His visit to North Carolina was included in his tour of the southern states in the spring and summer of 1791, part of his plan to visit every state in the union during his term in office. We know about his visit to Kernersville from an entry in his personal diary for June 2, 1791. Washington’s party was traveling from Old Salem, where he had spent several days, to Guilford County, where he was to visit the site of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, a major battle in the Revolutionary War.

In honor of Washington’s devotion to plants and sustainable agricultural practices, the breakfast program will feature Dean Norton, Director of Horticulture at Mount Vernon, home of George Washington, as guest speaker.  Dean is responsible for applying the latest plant science and management techniques to horticulture in the historic setting of Washington’s Mt Vernon.
