The effort to create an open-space corridor leading north from Greensboro's Lake Townsend to the Northern school complex (previous report here), comes together with a critical vote from the Guilford County Commission to approve the purchase of 250 acres from the Richardson family.

Richardson-Morton tracts would build Guilford trail network

Guilford County open-space advocates hope the county commission will agree on Dec. 11 to spend $2.6 million to purchase a tract of wetlands north of Lake Townsend that is owned by Richardson family, heir to the Vicks VapoRub fortune. The state of North Carolina already has an adjacent tract owned by the Morton family under contract for purchase. The two properties would create a nature preserve with a trail linking Greensboro to the Northern schools complex, and by extension to the new Haw River State Park.

John Young (pictured here), chairman of the open space committee, is leading the charge. More in our Nov. 26 print edition.
