Students at Weaver Academy will auction

home for a minimum $39,000

Greensboro, N.C. – A house built by students at Weaver Academy is going up for auction.

Building trade students build the entire house from start to finish, giving them real-world and hands-on experience in a career they’re interested in pursuing.

“This project gave our students the opportunity to experience the type of work they’d be asked to perform on the job,” explains Bob Gantt, director of Career and Technical Education (CTE). “Now, when they apply for a job or college, they will be able to put this on their resume and stand out from other applicants who may not have that same experience. We try to encourage this type of project for all of our CTE courses whenever appropriate.”

The house will be sold at auction with a minimum bid of $39,000 through Dave’s Auctions. It is 1,430 square feet with three bedrooms and two baths. The kitchen is complete with cabinets, but no countertops, and the bathrooms include tubs and vanities. The new owner will need to install floor covering, appliances, water heater, HVAC, ceiling and floor insulation, faucets, toilets, kitchen sink, counter and closet shelves.

The money from the auction will be used to buy materials to build a new home next year.

Building trade classes are part of the Architecture and Construction career cluster, one of 14 career clusters offered by GCS. Other clusters include Communications, Finance, Logistics, Manufacturing, Marketing and more. Various CTE courses are offered at GCS high schools and almost all are available to any GCS student through Weaver Academy. State Recognizes GCS Schools for High Graduation Rate

Ten schools recognized by State Superintendent on Tuesday

"Greensboro, N.C. – Ten Guilford County Schools were recognized by State Superintendent June Atkinson Tuesday for posting outstanding graduation rates for the 2014-15 school year.

Of the 10, nine were recognized for posting 100 percent graduation rates. They are: Greensboro College Middle College, Weaver Academy, The Academy at Smith, The Early College at Guilford, The Middle College at UNCG, Penn-Griffin School for the Arts, The Middle College at GTCC-Greensboro, The Middle College at N.C. A&T University and The Academy at High Point Central.

Northwest High was also recognized as one of the top two schools with the highest graduation rates in the state for its size, 400-499 graduates. Northwest had a graduation rate of 96.6 percent in 2015, one of 10 GCS schools that posted graduation rates of 90 or above, in addition to the nine that received 100 percent.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for these schools and for Guilford County Schools,” says Superintendent Maurice “Mo” Green. “I am proud of the work we are doing to help every student reach this important milestone and grateful to the teachers, administrators and students who continue to push for excellence.”

The state recognized 11 North Carolina school districts and 60 schools for their graduation rates at Tuesday’s ceremony.

“I am so proud of the teachers, school counselors, coaches, principals and district leaders, and others who have worked tirelessly to make sure more students are graduating from North Carolina’s public schools than ever before. Their dedication and tenacity enabled the state to reach the all-time high graduation rate of 85.6 in 2014-15,” said State Superintendent June Atkinson. “As we honor the schools and districts that do an exceptional job keeping students in school and on track for graduation, I am hopeful that these award winners will continue to share best practices and serve as models for districts and schools across the state.”

This is the seventh consecutive year Guilford County Schools set a new record in terms of its high school graduation rate at 89.3 percent. For more details, click here.

GCS Students Take Top Prizes at Guitarganza

Three Weaver Academy students took first,

second and third prize in the competition

"Greensboro, N.C. – At its meeting Thursday, the Guilford County Board of Education recognized three Weaver Academy guitar students for taking the top three prizes in the 2015 Guitarganza Guitar Competition.

The event was sponsored by the Piedmont Classic Guitar Society, and featured a full day of workshops, competition and performances by guitar students and professionals from across the Southeast U.S. More than 100 high school students participated and 21 competed. Connor Brady took first prize, second prize went to Thommasaht Nhouyvanisvong and Norren Drewery earned third prize. Drewery is a senior at Weaver and will attend Appalachian State University in the fall where he will major in music performance and education.

The festival also featured renowned guitarist Dennis Azagabiz as the guest artist and clinician."
