Theatre Alliance to perform The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical

"It’s holiday time down in Armadillo Acres (North Florida’s premier mobile-living community), and everyone’s filled with warmth and beer.  But when a freak bout of amnesia strikes the trailer park Scrooge, neighborly love is put to the test.  Be on hand as Betty, Lin, and Pickles jingle all the way with some new neighbors in an all-new, all-trailer-park musical!  This companion to the original Great American Trailer Park Musical is just as much of a cat-fightin’, sun-worshippin’, chair-throwin’ good time — but with tinsel and Keg Nog.

Jaye Pierce appeared in Theatre Alliance’s production of the original Great American Trailer Park Musical and is thrilled to head back to her old stomping grounds.  “After six years, I am happier than a light up flamingo to be back at Armadillo Acres,” says Pierce.  “I am truly just thrilled beyond belief (and I am not just saying this) to be back with the hysterical writers and most of the same cast from the original.”

Ken Ashford, also in the original show, echoes her thoughts.  “It’s great to be back with this cast,” says Ashford, “We just laugh ourselves to tears!”

Says director Jamie Lawson, “Rarely does a sequel surpass the original in humor and creativity, but I think the writers of The Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical have struck gold.  With the addition of some new characters and hysterical one-liners and outrageous situations, this show is destined to become a campy hit!”

That sweet transvestite and his motley crew did the time warp, and, just in time for Halloween, they’re back for a revival.  Complete with sass from the audience, cascading toilet paper and an array of other audience participation props, this deliberately kitschy rock ‘n’ roll sci fi gothic is more fun than ever.

This is Theatre Alliance’s third production of The Rocky Horror Show.  The musical that spawned the cult movie and its continual midnight showings, this stage show has all the familiar elements, from the “Science Fiction Double Feature” opening to dancing “The Time Warp” -- and a department store’s worth of fishnets. 

Just like at the movie version, callbacks are allowed and encouraged!  There will also be prop kits available for sale, and patrons are allowed to bring their own props, as long as there is nothing biological – no water guns, open flames, hot dogs/toast/rice throwing – for the safety of the rest of the audience and the performers.

There is a midnight matinee on Halloween night, and this will be the first production in Theatre Alliance’s newly renovated theater.  The Size Matters campaign increased the amount of seating in the intimate space, as well as making other improvements.  There will be a grand re-opening celebration before the opening night performance on Friday, October 23.  All ticket holders are encouraged to arrive as early as 7 p.m. for treats from Theatre Alliance’s new restaurant neighbor, Carmine’s. 

Cheri Van Loon serves as choreographer and also plays Columbia, Dr. Frank N. Furter’s tap dancing servant.  She says, “It’s astounding to be back at the Frankenstein Place for the third time.  I’m having a blast with friends old and new, and we are all ready to do the Time Warp in the renovated space!”

Theatre Alliance presents Henson Milam’s concert On My Own

"Henson Milam, who appeared in the productions of Les Miserables and Next to Normal at Theatre Alliance, is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

For one night only, Henson will delight and enchant Theatre Alliance audiences with an intimate concert filled with some of your favorite songs and hers. Henson will be continuing her arts training at Boston University in the fall. Come see her so you can say you "knew her when"!

Says Henson, “This night is a way for me to reflect on my life as a performer so far and to explore the possibilities that might be in store for me in the future. I hope this concert can be my way of saying ‘thank you’ to all the people at Theatre Alliance who have truly changed my life for the better. From my first show at TA, Legally Blonde, to Les Mis and Next to Normal, all the way to the staged reading of Yellow, I have grown so much as a person and an actress. The nurturing and positive environment that is Theatre Alliance is a part of my life that is going to stay with me forever. This isn’t a goodbye to my theatre career in the triad, but simply a ‘see you later!’”

Theatre Alliance Presents Del Shores: SINgularly Sordid

"Theatre Alliance is pleased to present Del Shores’ new stand-up show, Del Shores: SINgularly Sordid, on Sun., Aug.16, at 6 pm. The presentation is benefitting Theatre Alliance’s building campaign.

The Southern-loved writer/director/producer -- and most recently added stand-up comedian – is a familiar name to Winston-Salem theater audiences. His plays Southern Baptist Sissies, Sordid Lives, Daddy’s Dyin’ (Who’s Got The Will?), and The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife have been performed on the TA and other area stages. Theatre Alliance also produced a staged reading of his drama Yellow last season.

The creator of the Sordid Lives franchise and writer/director/producer of Southern Baptist Sissies, Blues for Willadean, and Queer As Folk is back on stage with all new hysterical, sordid stories. This time, Shores discusses the unexpected comedy of returning to the world of dating after divorce in your 50s. Tinder, Grindr, Scruff, OkCupid – “Oh, sh*t!” Shores quips, “Sometimes it's just too damn much!” He shares a litany of bad dates and his own trials and tribulations of being on the prowl again when you are a "minor gay celebrity".

In SINgularly Sordid, Shores also poses the question – “Did my movie Sordid Lives really influence six different women to super-glue their cheating boyfriends and husband's… um, members, to their stomachs?”

And of course, Shores shares more letters from the haters and his responses. Also, he has some new celebrity dish on Dolly Parton, George Lopez, Leslie Jordan, and more. The censors will be absent and if you are easily offended, Shores warns, “Stay home!”

Shores has had a busy year with the release of the film of his play Southern Baptist Sissies, which received both critical and commercial success. He has also just completed the screenplay for the final chapter of his Sordid Lives franchise – A Very Sordid Wedding. “Yes, we’re returning to the characters one last time, bringing them into 2015 with Equality marching into Winters, Texas.” Shores said recently. The film is set to film in Dallas in October.

Del Shores: SINgularly Sordid will be presented Sunday August 16th at 6 pm at Theatre Alliance. There will be a VIP meet and greet with Shores after the show.
