The stain that stopped the press

I included the above image in the layout of this weeks cover story, "Cold Case." The story is about a 35-year-old unsolved murder, and I wanted to invoke a well-worn case file in the design.

The morning of press I got the follow call from our printer:

"This is Chris."

"Yes, um... there's some kind of stain on page twelve? Like, blotches over top of the words."

"Really? Oh no."

"Yeah, it's like someone sat a cup of coffee on it, but I don't know how..."

"Ohh... oh, that's supposed to be there."

"What? It's a design element?"

"Yeah."

(laughter)

"We stopped the presses! We though something was wrong with the plate!"

"Oh no, I'm sorry..."

"No, it's okay. We didn't know how you could have spilled something on it, but it looked..."

"Oh, yeah, we still use paste boards here. Someone spilled coffee on the finals"

"Okay."

"That's a joke."

It went on like that for a while. My apologies again, guys... maybe art should imitate life a little less in the future.
