A handful of projects by developers that would add hundreds of apartments and condominiums to areas near or at the Gate City's fringe are running up against opposition from neighbors.
Blogger and journalist Ed Cone cites the triumph of Citizens for Haw River State Park as being a possible "watershed moment" in the emergence of a "smart growth" coalition in Greensboro and Guilford County that would prioritize infill development and preserve open spaces. Cone also notes that rezoning opponents are making increasing use of the internet as an organizing tool
One example is the "Friendly Avenue Rezoning" blog, a group of residents opposed to a proposal by Mega Builders (one of whose partners is Guilford County Commissioner Mike Winstead) to build 228 apartment units near Guilford College on property owned, in part, by Guilford County Commissioner Linda Shaw.
The rezoning decision by the Greensboro City Council got bumped back to Feb. 5 when it won only four favorable votes on Jan. 15. With District 4 Councilman Mike Barber recusing himself because of a direct or indirect conflict of interest, at-large councilman Robbie Perkins being absent, and with Mayor Yvonne Johnson, at-large Councilwoman Mary Rakestraw and District 1 Councilwoman Dianne Bellamy-Small voting against, the motion fell short of the majority votes needed for approval.
