Gang leader's social-justice vision belied by criminal associations
NC Latin Kings gang leader Jorge Cornell has thrust himself in the public eye following a raft of indictments against alleged MS-13 gang members in North Carolina. In addition to calling for a peace agreement among Greensboro gangs, he has also presented himself as an ambassador of unity between Latinos and blacks, and as a champion of undocumented immigrants.
As a leader in an organization that has long occupied a gray area between criminal enterprise and social-justice organizing, Cornell styles himself in the mold of Huey Newton of the Black Panthers and other revolutionary groups of the 1960s. He also takes a provocative and defiant stance against the Greensboro Police Department, and individuals linked to his organization have been charged and convicted of violent crimes and drug offenses.
