Four more candidates filed to run for Winston-Salem City Council on Wednesday, bringing the total number of hopefuls to 19 for the upcoming municipal election.
Attorney Wayne Patterson made it official, filing his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to represent the city's North Ward — the seat vacated by Nelson Malloy's retirement. Republican Matthew Shelton entered the race for his party's nomination in the Northwest Ward. Northwest Ward incumbent councilwoman Wanda Merschel also filed her candidacy on Wednesday. Merschel is seeking a fourth term on the council.
Republican Donald T. Shaw filed his candidacy for the Republican nomination to represent the city's Southwest Ward. Shaw will have at least one opponent in the Sept. 15 Republican primary — attorney Ted Shipley. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Mayor Allen Joines remains unopposed in his quest for a third term in office.
Candidate filing closes at noon on July 17.
