Sgt. Mickey Hutchens of the Winston-Salem Police Department remains in critical condition, and officer Daniel Clark is reported to be in serious condition after being treated for gunshot wounds stemming from an altercation Monte Denard Evans this morning behind the Bojangles restaurant in the 1500 block of Peters Creek Parkway.
Both officers are being treated at NC Baptist Hospital for their injuries.
During an afternoon press conference, Assistant Police Chief Barry Rountree said at 10:29 a.m., the Winston-Salem Police Department received a call from a female employee of the Bojangles restaurant. The female caller reported that she had seen her ex-husband, who was wanted on outstanding warrants.
When Hutchens and Clark arrived at the scene, they identified the suspect, Evans, who fled on foot. Sgt. Hutchens, a 27-year veteran of the police force, and Clark, a 5-year veteran of the force, pursued Evans as he fled toward Salem Creek. Hutchens and Clark caught up with Evans at Salem Creek and a struggle ensued.
During the struggle, both officers and Evans were shot. Evans was killed, and an autopsy will be performed, Rountree said.
The State Bureau of Investigation will conduct the investigation into the incident.
“We will provide additional information as we get it," Rountree said. "We don’t want to speculate on anything. We don’t want to compromise the investigation.”
