YES! Weekly in the news

Yep, we've done it again. YES! Weekly published its annual April Fools Day edition lampooning the Triad and some of its most notorious characters. But even before the issue hit the streets, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines took umbrage at our satirical "article" about his recent trip to Las Vegas and his ideas on how to incorporate some of its flash to the Camel City in a tweet  at around 1 p.m.

Shortly afterwards I was hit up by WXII reporter Ben Senger for a spot on the evening news tonight. The print version is online now.

Joines and his staff issued a rejoinder today at around 4. Well played, friends. Press release follows:

Winston-Salem Mayor Expresses Appreciation to YES! Weekly
For Its Commitment To Clean Air By Discontinuing Publication

For Release: April 1, 2010

Winston-Salem, NC – Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines said today (April 1) that he was very appreciative by the decision of YES!  Weekly to join his efforts to reduce carbon emissions by ceasing publication with the April 1 edition.

In a statement to reporters earlier in the day, YES! Weekly Editor Brian Clarey said that the editorial staff at YES! Weekly had unanimously determined that the news value of the publication was not worth the number of trees that are sacrificed to make the paper it is printed on.

A spokesperson with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Department of Air Quality concurred, saying this decision will positively impact local air quality because of the reduction of greenhouse gases (hot air) that significantly increase on the days that YES! Weekly is published.

According to projections by the EPA, this reduction of BS2 into the air will allow the region to attain its air quality compliance goals five years ahead of schedule.

Mayor Joines said, however, that he was particularly concerned for local pet shop owners who rely solely on YES! Weekly to line the bottoms of bird, hamster and gerbil cages.

In reaction to news of the paper’s demise, YES! Weekly’s Winston-Salem reader staged a silent vigil in the men’s room at City Hall.

For more information, please contact Allen Joines at 408-8082.

I'm proud of Mayor Joines - it's good to laugh once at a while and fun rejoinders are too few and far between. Good job on both your ends of this.
