Greensboro police captain reportedly on medical leave

UPDATE, 9:39 p.m.: I have had the opportunity to speak with Capt. Cherry. Rather than medical leave, he says his status can more accurately be described as administrative duty.

Capt. Charles E. Cherry, who commands the Eastern Division of the Greensboro Police Department, is currently taking medical leave, Assistant City Manager Michael Speedling told me today.

Cherry is among 39 black officers who are plaintiffs in a federal discrimination suit against the city. His leave from active duty makes him the third of the plaintiffs currently facing an adverse personnel situation. Early this week, Assistant Chief Ronald E. Rogers filed suit against the city to overturn a five-day suspension imposed by City Manager Rashad Young. And Officer AJ Blake faces the loss of his law enforcement license from a state administrative panel. Last year, Blake was terminated by Chief Tim Bellamy, but then-acting City Manager Bob Morgan overturned the decision.

The circumstances of Cherry's situation are not completely clear at this time. Anyone with additional information is welcome to e-mail me at jordan@yesweekly.com.
