The ballot of High Point City Council is filling fast, following the opening of the filing period on July 2. Filing closes on July 16 at noon.
Dwayne Hemingway-El has filed for mayor. Incumbent Beckie Smothers has not filed, but has said she plans to run for reelection.
Filing for the two at-large seats are incumbent Latimer B. Alexander IV, Regina Chahal and Britt W. Moore. At-large Councilwoman Mary Lou Blakeney has not filed at this point.
Filing for Ward 1 is Jeffrey Golden. Ward 1 Councilwoman Bernita Sims has not filed at this point.
Filing for Ward 2 is Jill M. Harwood. Ward 2 Councilman Foster Douglas has not filed at this point.
Filing for Ward 3 is incumbent Michael D. Pugh.
Filing for the open Ward 4 seat is a candidate identified only as Henley. The Ward 4 seat is becoming vacant with the retirement of Councilman Bill Bencini, who is positioned to take the District 2 seat on the Guilford County Commission.
Filing for Ward 5 is Geoffrey Schull. Incumbent Christopher Whitley has not filed at this point.
Two candidates, Will Armfield and Jim Corey, are contending for Ward 6. That seat is becoming vacant with current occupant John Faircloth's election to NC House. Corey previously ran for the Ward 6 seat in 2008, and lost to Faircloth.
Filing for Guilford County Soil and Water Board closed on July 2. Five candidates are contending for two seats up for election, including incumbents Lewis Brandon and Dick Phillips, along with Ray Briggs, Andy Courts and Ron Tuck.
UPDATE, July 6: Several new candidates added their name to the ballot today, including mayoral incumbent Becky Smothers, Ward 5 incumbent Christopher M. Whitley, and Gerald Grubb and Jason Ewing in Ward 6. Grubb made an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination for NC House District 61. The winner of that race was John Faircloth, who is vacating the Ward 6 seat.
