Moses Cone cancer center begins expansion

The Moses Cone Regional Cancer Center, located on Elam Avenue in Greensboro, broke ground yesterday for an expansion and renovation. The project has budgeted $15 million, with two thirds being invested by Moses Cone Health System and the remaining amount sourced to what a press release calls “community contributions.” Completion is expected by the end of 2011, adding 21,000 square feet and renovating 12,000 square feet. The expansion, which is designed to “enhance patient and educational resources,” will include a dedicated breast cancer center.

Moses Cone Health Services spokesman Doug Allred said the expansion project is expected to create about 260 temporary construction jobs. Rentenbach Constructors, a company with offices across the South, has been awarded the construction contract, while Charlotte-based Wilkerson Associates is the designated architect, Charlotte Engineers is under contract to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing services, and Manning Design Group is under contract for interior design.

Allred said the expansion is being undertaken to accommodate the need for more space rather than to add programming that would require new permanent healthcare hiring.
“Most of the addition is centered around breast-cancer care because that is more a part of what we’re seeing [in demand],” he said. “The good thing is that they’re living longer and because of that they’re needing more support services, including counseling and nutrition advice.”
