Senior staff at the city of Greensboro learned from consultant Joe Readling last month that the city could save $1 million a year in transportation costs if it were to haul waste from its transfer station to a landfill in Randolph County instead of to the Uwharrie Regional Landfill in Montgomery County that is run by Republic Services. Randolph County is considering reopening its landfill, which went out of business in the late 1990s. The cost savings would be realized by cutting the hauling distance in half.
Meanwhile, city staff is floating the idea of privatizing the Gillespie Golf Course in southeast Greensboro, which Parks and Recreation Director Greg Jackson reports as operating at a loss. Jackson has requested permission to move forward with a request for proposals.
