Deep Roots Plans Community Conversation Meeting To Maximize Co-op’s Expansion and Outreach Downtown Greensboro, Saturday, April 2nd


Deep Roots Board of Directors is holding its annual retreat in Downtown Greensboro on Saturday April 2nd . The Board, along with management and staff, will host a facilitated conversation on the ways that Deep Roots can connect to the local community with the anticipated expansion to the North Eugene Street site, which borders planned Phase 3 of the Greenway. The event is free and open to the public.

The public is invited to join Deep Roots for this exciting first ever community conversation about the expansion and the diverse partnerships that can be formed to help make Deep Roots the HUB of sustainable living in this global market. Participants will help identify new opportunities and contribute personal insights to the conversation which will develop the next steps for Deep Roots Market. Cooperative consultant Art Sherwood will facilitate the conversations.

Art Sherwood is a consultant who travels across the United States to work with cooperatives to achieve excellence. He is on staff atCooperative Development Services Consulting Co-op; and is also an Associate Professor of Management, Indiana State University.Mr. Sherwood has been active in leadership development and training for over 15 years. He has worked with a variety of for- and not-for-profit boards in the areas of strategy, planning, board leadership development and teams. He was instrumental in the founding of the Local Growers Guild, a marketing co-op for local producers in South Central Indiana. He applies his business strategy experience from other sectors into helping boards of mission-driven organizations be more effective. “Co-ops are vital partners in communities across the nation who strive to create a local, sustainable economy. Deep Roots is keenly interested in supporting this ‘local’ vision in Greensboro. The morning session of the retreat will engage everyone in this exciting visionary conversation,” he said.

Attendees are invited to learn the very latest about the store expansion, and be part of the visioning to determine how the cooperative can connect with individuals and partner with community groups to celebrate and grow Greensboro’s local economies. Refreshments will be served.

The Community Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 2nd at Merge on Elm, 527 S. Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro as follows:

Drop in/casual conversation to build a bigger, better cooperative and community center, addressing food and its connections to:

· Local, sustainable economies

· Social justice

· Alternative transportation and delivery systems

10am to 12pm Visioning Meeting

In-depth discussions and facilitated conversations.

Locally owned and managed, Deep Roots is incorporated as a cooperative, meaning its shoppers can purchase a share to become part owners of the business. The store currently boasts 1700 participating households, with shoppers from as far as Asheboro and Danville; ownership is not required to shop at the market. The cooperative is an area leader in offering healthy, organic and local groceries, including packaged and bulk foods, fresh produce, and nutritional and personal care products. Established in 1976, the cooperative offers owners community partner discounts, educational programs and patronage dividends.
