Waste to energy reconsidered

One company that appears to have changed its mind about the viability of waste-to-energy as a technology for processing municipal solid waste is MRR Southern, a Raleigh company that once proposed to open a waste-to-energy facility in southern Greensboro in response to an earlier Request For Proposals by the city.

MRR Southern is now a partner in a new outfit called Gate City Waste Services that currently has a proposal before city council to reopen the White Street Landfill.

“Gate City Waste Services is not proposing a waste conversion technology at this time,” Gate City Waste Services proposal states. “It is our belief that one or more technologies are close to being proven as economical and sustainable in the waste management arena. Our team has been involved in research and system/technology development for several years and we are anxious to see the industry as a whole move away from the traditional practice of waste burial. At the appropriate time we would like to present options to the city and renegotiated any necessary aspects of our potential city contract, so that our community can be a leader in this field.”
