White Street Landfill decision, a set on Flickr.
The Greensboro City Council voted 4-3 last night to initiate contract negotiations with two companies, Gate City Waste Services and Waste Industries, to operate the White Street Landfill.
At-large Councilman Danny Thompson, who made the motion, said the reason for eliminating Advanced Disposal was that it did not outline an attractive contingency plan for an outcome in which the landfill could not be utilized and it did not express an interest in implementing waste-to-energy technology at a future date.
Voting in favor of moving forward with the process to reopen the landfill were Thompson, Mayor Bill Knight, District 4 Councilwoman Mary Rakestraw and District 5 Councilwoman Trudy Wade. Those opposed were at-large Councilman Robbie Perkins, District 1 Councilwoman Dianne Bellamy-Small and District 2 Councilman Jim Kee. Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan and District 3 Councilman Zack Matheny were recused because of conflicts of interest.
