The Greensboro City Council was supposed to hold a briefing session on Tuesday to consider the future management of the farmers curb market. The briefing had been scheduled after the council voted in early June to not take action on a recommendation by a review committee to negotiate a contract with a nonprofit to manage and operate the market. The group recommended for the contract, Greensboro Farmers Market Inc., has pledged to maintain a mix of offerings from farmers, organic growers, prepared food vendors and crafters. A rival group wants to give large-scale farmers control over the market.
Now, the briefing has been canceled.
“The reason that I was given was that since we are having an executive session this afternoon about the city attorney, many council members did not want two meetings in two days,” said Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan in a Facebook post on Monday. “I think that is pathetic. We are elected to do a job. Let’s do it!”
At-large Councilman Robbie Perkins concurred.
“This is not a hard issue,” he said. “Study committee. Strong recommendation. Inclusive program. Well-designed business plan. Should have been handled a month ago. Now, we get to wait another month.”
