After announcing last year that she would not seek another term on Greensboro City Council, Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Vaughan changed tack. Now, she’s back in the race. Frustration with the current council’s dysfunction prompted both her initial decision to stand down and her reconsideration.
“I’ve been approached by individuals who have asked me to try to stay because they think I bring a good voice to council,” she told YES! Weekly. “I asked myself: Because I’m frustrated, does that mean I should quit? I decided the answer to that should be no, because if you quit that means you’ve been beaten.”
Vaughan said her misgivings have more to do with the division and lack of trust than any specific policy direction taken by the current council.
“I always cringe at the thought that if we have a company come to Greensboro to visit and if they turn on the government channel, they run away screaming,” she said. “I would like to see a coordinated effort to brand this city. People are confused. Are we in North Carolina or South Carolina? Are we Greensboro or Greenville? We need to cheerlead our success. I would like to see concentrated efforts in finding the good and highlighting it. We have a tendency to view the glass as half empty. We’re more than half full and we need to get back to acting that way.”
