Legislature upholds Perdue’s veto of Voter ID Bill

The NC General Assembly could not muster enough votes to override Gov. Beverly Perdue’s veto of House Bill 351, better known as the Voter ID bill. The final vote count in the NC House was 68-51 in favor of an override, four votes short of the necessary three-fifths majority.

“I want to thank the legislators who stood firm in the belief that every North Carolinian has the constitutional right to vote and that the state should not be creating obstacles to stop them,” Perdue said in a statement.

The bill generated a considerable amount of backlash when it was introduced earlier this year. A component of the NC Republican Party’s 100-day legislative agenda, the bill, which was later renamed the Restore Confidence in Government bill, would have required voters to show a valid photo ID before casting their ballot in local, state and national elections.
