Police Department, are shown on campus

"HIGH POINT, N.C., June 16, 2014 – Guilford County teens interested in developing their leadership skills began a 10-day leadership academy today, hosted by High Point University and the High Point Police Department.
The 20 students were selected for the academy by exhibiting exceptional self-control, responsibility and interest in being leaders through the school year.
“I’m really excited to be here and with other young leaders like myself,” said Kaley Hebbard, who will be attending High Point Central in the fall. “It feels good to be able to give back to our community.”
During the academy, students will volunteer at various organizations around the area and hear from local leaders. The aim is to teach the students how to build confidence and self-esteem, identify personal interests, strengths and set goals.
Chris Dudley, HPU’s Chief of Staff, gives the academy a tour of HPU

Today, students participated in a discussion with Chris Dudley, Chief of Staff at HPU, who talked about the characteristics of good leaders; a tour of HPU’s campus; and a visit to Second Harvest Food Bank.
“We wanted to partner with High Point University because realistically the next step after high school is usually college,” says Lt. Petunia Sellers, School Resource Officer Supervisor for the High Point Police Department. “What better way to begin preparing students for college than to expose them to a college environment? The High Point Police Department and High Point University work well together and want only what’s best for our youth.”
