Power and Politics: High Point University Students Meet Top Government Officials in Washington, D.C.

HPU students on the Power and Politics “Maymester” experience in front of the White House.

"Political science majors networked with top government officials and studied “Power and Politics” in the city where it all happens, Washington, D.C., during a “Maymester” experience through High Point University.

The program was an extension of political science courses offered in the spring. Students spent the semester examining case studies and eyewitness accounts of politics and policy making, then spent two weeks in the nation’s capital interacting with elected officials, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, and other powerbrokers.

“The networking opportunities and career exposure the program provided us in Washington D.C were unparalleled. The trip was a tremendous opportunity for us as students who will soon be looking to work in the field,” says rising junior Anne Davey. “Being able to combine our political science classroom knowledge with incredible experiences, from meeting senators to visiting powerful government organizations, was the opportunity of a lifetime.”

“This experience is designed to provide students with first-hand accounts of life, work and career opportunities in our nation's capital,” says Dr. Sam Whitt, assistant professor of political science. “Our program is ideal for any students who are intrigued by beltway politics and are considering internship and job opportunities in Washington D.C.”
