"The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the public to join in the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Marylene F. Griffin Park and Community Recreation Center at 5301 Hilltop Rd. at 10 am Saturday, August 16. Past and present members of City Council, along with other City officials, will be on hand for the ceremony that will include demonstrations, food trucks, games, music, and activities.
The 15,000-square-foot Griffin community recreation center marks the first such facility built since 1990, when the City opened the Leonard center. Funding for development and acquisition of the land was made possible by the 2000 voter-approved bond referendum. Amenities of the new facility include a gymnasium that can be used for basketball and volleyball, meeting rooms, and a fitness room with cardio equipment, free weights, and strength training equipment.
The scenic 48-acre park and center is named to honor Marylene F. Griffin. Mrs. Griffin was a well known philanthropist and with her husband, co-founded the D.H.Griffin Wrecking Company, Inc. Mrs. Griffin also appreciated the value of recreation, as she was an avid golfer; and in fact, the new center is located on the site of the former Twin Oaks Golf Course."
