Suspicious Package Reported at a School Turns Out to be a Student’s Project

"A suspicious package reported today by a security officer disrupted activities at the Greensboro Day School until law enforcement officials confirmed the items in the container were part of a student’s class project.
Greensboro police responded to the campus at 5401 Lawndale Drive shortly after noon today after a 911 call altered them to a suspicious package outside the school’s cafeteria.
An alert security guard saw what appeared to be a cannon ball and a grenade inside a plastic container.
School officials placed the students on lock down and notified parents of the incident.
A student told police that the items were part of an assignment for an English class, and he left the container by the by cafeteria as he went to retrieve something from a car. While the container was unattended, the security guard walked by, saw the items, and initiated the protocol for a suspicious package.
Members of the Greensboro Police Department’s Hazardous Device Team confirmed that the grenade was inert and posed no risk to students. Officers safely removed both items from school grounds.
No one was charged in the incident.

The lock down was lifted at approximately 1:30 pm."
