"GREENSBORO, NC (Feb. 5, 2015) – A North Carolina man was arrested by the United States Marshals in Springfield, Ill. along with the Great Lakes Regional Task force on Feb. 3 in connection with a 2002 Greensboro homicide that had turned cold.
Stanley Frederick Westphal, 49, was taken into custody without incident at a home on Jefferson St. and faces a charge of First Degree for the death of Anthony Demetrius Coates.
New evidence linked Westphal to the murder Coates of who was found stabbed to death in a Greensboro hotel on Dec 21, 2002. Police were called to the Lodge America at 1200 Lanada Rd. that Saturday afternoon when a guest in a nearby room reported hearing someone calling for help. Upon arrival, police located Coates deceased in the bathroom. Coates, then 44, was originally from Florida and had been staying in the hotel for several weeks before his death.
Greensboro detectives continued to work the case throughout the years, interviewing people who knew Coates along with possible suspects. Evidence collected from the crime scene was recently re-analyzed and produced an investigative lead that garnered enough probable cause against Westphal for the murder charge.
Westphal is currently confined in Illinois, and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.
The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Automated Fingerprint Identification System Unit assisted with the investigation."
