"GREENSBORO, NC (May 26, 2015) – After years of planning and extensive collaboration among multiple organizations, the Guilford County Family Justice Center soon will open its doors as a single portal for services to assist people affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and/or elder abuse. The Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina is proud to be among the founding partner agencies.
On Monday, June 15, community members and officials will formally announce the Center’s opening in a brief ceremony and ribbon cutting. The event begins at 3 p.m. adjacent to Governmental Plaza on Greene St., and continues across the street at the GCFJC at 201 S. Greene St. where officials will dedicate the facility and staff will offer tours.
The mission of the Family Justice Center is to empower victims of family violence to live free from violence and abuse, and hold offenders accountable by providing easily accessible, coordinated, and comprehensive services in a single location.
The Children’s Law Center’s mission is to provide children with quality legal advocacy, focusing on domestic violence issues, high conflict custody cases, and ensuring access to education. Our ultimate goal is to enable children to grow up in safe environments and to become emotionally healthy adults.
“For years, one of the biggest barriers to helping victims of family violence was the difficulty in accessing services,” explained Catherine Johnson, Director of the Guilford County Family Justice Center. “This Center removes that barrier by bringing a broad range of community partners under one roof in order to provide a full range of coordinated care to our families.”
Services offered through the Center include victim advocacy and support for children and adults, shelter placement, assistance with filing emergency protective orders, criminal investigations, legal services, forensic nurse examinations, and coordinated referrals for mental health and substance abuse treatment. There is no cost to come to the Center.
“The Center is a place of hope and healing,” emphasized Johnson. “By protecting and empowering some of our county’s most vulnerable people, we can stop the violence, build stronger families, and make our community safer.”
The Center represents a significant partnership among County and City government officials, law enforcement agencies, social service organizations, and local nonprofits and universities.
The Guilford County Family Justice Center is open Monday- Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Appointments are not required. A playroom for children is available. Parking is free.
