GCS Seniors Break Records for Scholarships and Service Learning

Final graduations scheduled through Monday

"Greensboro, N.C. – During the next few days, the last of more than 5,300 high school seniors will receive their diplomas from Guilford County Schools.

The class of 2015 has accomplished great things. They’re going onto some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke and the UNC system. To help them on their way, they earned more than $156 million dollars in scholarships. That’s a new record for GCS, up more than six million from last year’s record. Those scholarships include two Gates Millennium Scholarships, two Duke Trinity Scholarships, the Jefferson Scholarship and at least 10 National Merit or National Achievement Scholarships.

A record number 1,137 will also receive awards for their dedication and service to the community. Of those, more than half (599) will receive Service-Learning Diplomas for giving 250 hours or more of service, and 538 will receive Service-Learning Exemplary Awards for at least 100 hours of service.

The 599 students earning diplomas will be eligible to win a car at our third-annual Cool to Serve event, happening Sunday, June 28, at the High Point Theatre. GCS is excited to welcome back Ilderton Dodge as the Cool to Serve sponsor, and they will be providing the Dodge Dart to give away."
