United Way Receives Check from AT&T for 2016 Campaign

"AT&T presented United Way of Forsyth County a check September 28 as a contribution to the 2016 annual campaign. The presentation occurred at the Carl Russell Community Center, a strong community resource located on Carver School Road.

The center is home to an AT&T high speed internet computer lab that serves local children and their families, some of whom otherwise may not have access to computers. This computer lab served as the program launch location of NETT (Neighborhood Empowerment Through Technology). The NETT program offers a series of free computer classes  with vocational training and employment assistance.  Other organizations partnering with the city on NETT in addition to the United Way of Forsyth County, include the Winston-Salem Urban League, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), Forsyth Technical Community College (FTCC), Forsyth County Public Library, and WinstonNet.

NETT is one of twenty-one new programs that are part of a larger United Way initiative called Place Matters. Place Matters serves thirteen neighborhoods in the northeast part of Winston Salem and uses an asset based approach, collaborates with residents and partners with local non-profit and grass roots organizations to strengthen the community as a whole. 

Kathleen Evans, Regional Director, External Affairs, Piedmont Triad AT&T;  Mayor Pro Tempore, Dr. Vivian Burke, United Way President/CEO Cindy Gordineer, and Mr. Ben Piggett,  Sr. Center Supervisor of the Carl Russell Community Center were all in attendance at the presentation.
