The Greensboro Symphony Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Music Director presents Transformation

Featuring pieces by composers Ravel, Shostakovich, and Mussorgsky
Dmitry Sitkovetsky to perform Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1

Transformation!  Performances will be held on January 23, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Aycock Auditorium, and January 24, 2015 at 8:00 p.m. in Dana Auditorium. Repertoire includes Ravel’s Pavane for a Dead Princess, Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, and Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
"Dmitry Sitkovetsky will dazzle audiences as he leads AND performs with the Greensboro Symphony in the third Tanger Outlets Masterworks performance this year:

Adding to the evening’s excitement, Maestro Sitkovetsky will perform the Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 himself.  This piece is near to Dmitry’s heart, his father having been one of the first violinists to perform it in 1956. His father performed the concerto for Shostakovich himself--as a result, Dmitry has the hand-written piano reduction of the piece with changes & markings made be the composer. In 1983, Dmitry learned and played the concerto for his Chicago Symphony debut in which Maksim Shostakovich, the composer’s son, conducted.

In conjunction with this season’s theme of Breaking Bad, this concert parallels the story of Walter White’s transformation from lovable protagonist to coldhearted criminal mastermind.  The Greensboro Symphony will play on this idea by exploring the evolution of music over time. Both Pavane and Pictures were written for piano and later orchestrated by Ravel. Ravel, a master colorist, uses the orchestra to its maximum potential, augmenting to such a degree that some movements are almost unrecognizable from the original.
