National HIV Testing Day, 2016: Could We Really End HIV/AIDS As We Know It?

"GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 21, 2016) - National HIV Testing Day will be marked on Monday, June 27th, with testing events and a public awareness campaign throughout Guilford County and nationwide. As Triad Health Project (THP) commemorates 30 years of service to people affected by HIV/AIDS, that organization highlights great potential for positive change in the coming few years. Advances in treatment and major new developments in prevention, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, put the ability within our grasp to reduce the number of new HIV infections to zero.

“We have understood for some time now that effective treatment of people with HIV greatly reduces the spread of the disease,” says Ken Keeton, THP’s interim executive director, “but one of most exciting, and largely unsung new developments is the discovery that one drug, Truvada, which for years has successfully been used to treat HIV infection, is also highly effective in preventing infection in HIV-negative people who are exposed to the virus. This needs to be a major new tool in our prevention toolbox.”

Recent clinical trials of Truvada have showed as high as 85 to 100% effectiveness in preventing HIV infection when taken daily as PrEP. “PrEP is an exciting new development that can make a major contribution to stopping the spread of HIV,” says Dr. David Wohl of NC AIDS Training and Education Center (NC-ATEC) at UNC Chapel Hill, an organization working to promote PrEP use in NC. “However, we are finding it to be seriously under-utilized and under-prescribed in our state. We encourage people who are interested in using PrEP to protect themselves against HIV infection, to learn more about this breakthrough treatment. We will also provide training and support to physicians who want to start providing Truvada as PrEP to their patients.”

“Make no mistake, HIV continues to affect our community, with some communities, such as African-American men who have sex with men, bearing a disproportionate share of the burden, and we are committed to bringing all resources to bear to end this epidemic,” says Keeton. “We are working toward a greater coordination with the medical community to expand the availability or PrEP and HIV testing, while deepening our long-standing partnerships with the Guilford County Health Department, Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency, and the Nia Community Action Center to reach deeply into our communities to provide HIV testing and education. We feel that by doing all this as a committed, compassionate community, we really can get to zero new infections.”

THP will be offering free, confidential testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia on June 27th, from 1pm to 7pm at their offices at 801 Summit Ave. in Greensboro. They offer these free screenings weekly on Monday evenings from 5-7pm and Wednesday afternoons from 1-3pm.

About Triad Health Project

Founded in 1986 by a group of friends who banded together in support of other friends who were newly diagnosed with HIV and lacking any system of support, Triad Health Project has evolved into Guilford County’s only HIV/AIDS service organization.  Triad Health Project works to fulfill its mission of providing practical and emotional support to individuals infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS, and educates those at risk and the community at large about HIV/AIDS.  THP currently provides direct care and support services to over 550 people in the community who are living with HIV/AIDS, and education and free and confidential testing for over 2,000 additional people every year."

Dining for Friends still needs to raise over $21,000 before June 30

"GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 27, 2016) - Triad Health Project (THP), the area’s HIV/AIDS service and support organization for 30 years, is currently $21,575 short of its 2016 Dining for Friends (DFF) goal and seeks the community’s support to close the gap before the end of its fiscal year, June 30.

“In so many ways, we’ve had a remarkable DFF season, with wonderful parties and engaged and generous donors.  But a few of our long-standing and high-contributing parties didn’t happen this year, and we need some extra help from our community to reach our goal,” says Ken Keeton, the agency’s interim executive director.

DFF is a 27-year tradition for THP.  Funds raised by DFF support THP’s direct client services programs which are focused on appropriate medical care and providing a host of supportive services to people living with HIV/AIDS.  Additionally, funds support THP’s prevention, testing, and education outreach initiatives throughout the larger community.

Donations of any amount are welcomed and appreciated, and can be made online at www.triadhealthproject.com, or by mailing a check to Triad Health Project, PO Box 5716, Greensboro, NC 27435.

“HIV/AIDS remains a huge challenge in Guilford County, and it’s not going away anytime soon,” says Keeton.  “Nearly 3,000 of our friends and neighbors are living with this chronic illness, and we still see new HIV infections, particularly among young adults.  There is still a lot of work to do.”

Dining for Friends Honors 30 Years of Triad Health Project

"GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 3, 2016) - Triad Health Project (THP), the area’s HIV/AIDS service and support organization for 30 years, announces plans for this year’s annual Dining for Friends (DFF).  DFF engages the support of the community at large to raise HIV/AIDS awareness and vital funding for the programs and services of THP.

“This year’s event celebrates and honors THP’s 30-year legacy of compassionate care, support, and education for our friends and neighbors affected by HIV/AIDS,” says Ken Keeton, the agency’s interim executive director.  “The great news is that continual advances in treatment and care mean that people diagnosed today can hope to live a long and normal life.  The unfortunate news is that we still see new HIV infections in our community in 2016, with young adults and adolescents under the age of 29 quickly becoming the new face of HIV/AIDS.  We still have a tremendous road ahead of us, and we can’t do it alone.”

Individuals and groups host DFF events – anything from themed dinner parties to backyard cookouts, and from game nights to wine tastings – whatever people already enjoy doing to bring their friends together.  In exchange for their hosts’ hospitality, guests make a contribution to THP.  DFF events happen year round, and hosts choose the date and time for their event.

THP’s grand event will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 6-9 pm at Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG, in collaboration with the largest DFF party, the Community Party.  All are invited.  Community Party VIP All Access tickets may be purchased in advance at www.diningforfriends.com or the door ($30 Adults; $20 Students; $10 Children 12 and under). VIP tickets provide unlimited access to food trucks, wine, beer, soft drinks, desserts, and the open art galleries at Weatherspoon.  Thanks to generous sponsorships, all proceeds will directly benefit THP.  Guests who have attended other DFF parties may bring their dessert pass for complimentary desserts and entertainment only, with access to a cash bar.  Tickets to the Community Party are required to enjoy food trucks and beverages included.

Entertainment includes Tracy Thornton on steel drums, Triad PRIDE Men’s Chorus, and The Beauty Operators.  The original canvas of this year’s DFF art by local artists Erik and Charlotte Ström will be raffled at the event.  Replacements, Ltd. continues its long legacy as Presenting Sponsor.  Cheesecakes by Alex is this year’s Exclusive Dessert Sponsor.
