"The city has posted online a list of candidate locations to be considered for AT&T’s high-speed internet service. The list was delivered this week to the City Council’s Community Development/Housing/General Government committee and can be viewed at CityofWS.org.
An agreement between the city and AT&T provides for approximately 20 free high-speed internet connections to community centers with a one-time cost of $300 to $500 for the installation. It also provides for approximately 20 no-cost installations to small and mid-size business locations, with no obligation to purchase services.
AT&T will consider the locations provided by the city and make an effort to serve the proposed locations if they are in the vicinity of where service will be available.
Additional locations may be suggested by sending an email to Dennis Newman, the city’s chief information officer, at dennis.newman@cityofws.org. The deadline for suggestions is Aug. 1.
AT&T announced in April plans to build an all-fiber network with speeds up to 1 gigabit per second in six cities and towns in North Carolina, including Winston-Salem. Plans call for the service, called U-verse with GigaPower, to be available to residents as well as businesses."
