Greensboro College, Guilford College Meet in Football "Soup Bowl" Sept. 3 to Benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry

"GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro College and Guilford College will meet in the 20th annual Soup Bowl football game, 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Guilford's Armfield Athletic Center in Greensboro.

Admission to the game is free with the donation of two cans of nonperishable food items. Proceeds will benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry.

Students, faculty and staff also are gathering food donations on their respective campuses before the game.

The annual series, which began when Greensboro College added football as an intercollegiate sport in 1997, has generated donations of more than 80,000 cans of food to benefit Urban Ministry and other regional charities.

Guilford leads the series 11-8 and has won the past three games.

Greensboro College provides a liberal-arts education grounded in the traditions of the United Methodist Church and fosters the intellectual, social, and, spiritual development of all students while supporting their individual needs.

Guilford College’s Center for Continuing Education Offers Evening Open House Event for Adult Students

"GREENSBORO July 8, 2015– Guilford College welcomes prospective students for the fall 2015 semester to their open house event hosted from 4-7pm by the Center for Continuing Education Tuesday, July 14, New Garden Hall-Guilford College 5800 West Friendly Ave., Greensboro.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet their admissions counselors to speak about general and transfer information. Guilford College Theatre Continues 2014-2015 Season with “The House of York”

"GREENSBORO- The Guilford College Department of Theatre Studies continues it 2014-2015 season with “The House of York,” adapted from Shakespeare with additional materials compiled by Royston Coppenger. Performances are April 22-25 at 7:30 pm and April 26 at 2 pm in Sternberger Auditorium, located in Founders Hall. Tickets are available online at www.guilford.edu/theatre. A free preview performance on April 21 at 7:30 pm is open to Guilford College students with student ID.

This dramatization uses the words of Shakespeare, other Elizabethan playwrights and period voices from documents, diaries, and letters to tell the gripping story of the Wars of the Roses and the rise and fall of the dynasty that ended with the bloody reign of King Richard III.

Guilford College’s production is directed by David Hammond, Chair and Professor of Theatre Studies. Scenic and costume design is by Robin Vest, Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies. Lighting design is by guest artist Jesse Belsky and sound design is by guest artist Justin Schmitz.

Steven Salaita to Speak About Palestine, Academic Freedom Feb. 3

"Steven Salaita, the Palestinian-American author and scholar at the center of a national debate over academic freedom, will speak at Guilford College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3.

He will deliver his lecture, “Palestine and Academic Freedom in the American Imagination,” in Joseph M. Bryan Jr. Auditorium, Frank Family Science Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Salaita was offered a tenured faculty position in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Department of American Indian Studies, but UIUC Chancellor Phyllis Wise “dehired” him in July, weeks before he was to start teaching, because some of his tweets criticizing Israel’s bombing of Gaza were deemed “uncivil.”

The decision not to hire Salaita “set off a huge national debate over academic freedom, civility and the role of trustees and administrators in reviewing hiring and tenure decisions,” in the words of Inside Higher Education.

The Feb. 3 lecture at Guilford “will examine how Palestine has been constructed as a mythical space in the United States, leading to deep identification with Israeli colonization based on centuries of American conquest,” according to organizers. “Terms like ‘civility’ arise from these histories.”

Greensboro College Faces Guilford College in Charity Football Game

"Greensboro College will visit crosstown rival Guilford College Saturday, Sept. 6, for a football game to benefit Greensboro Urban Ministry.

The 18th Annual Gate City Soup Bowl begins at 7 p.m. at Guilford's Armfield Athletic Center. Admission to the game is free with two cans of nonperishable food.

Both colleges also are holding canned-food drives on their respective campuses. The food will be donated to Greensboro Urban Ministry.

In 2013, the Soup Bowl and on-campus drives collected 7,091 cans of food for Greensboro Urban Ministry. Since the Soup Bowl's inception in 1997, the annual event has gathered almost 70,000 cans of food for Urban Ministry and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina.

Although Guilford's football program is more than 100 years older than Greensboro's, the series has remained close. Overall, Guilford leads 9-8. The Quakers defeated the Pride 31-28 in 2013.

ArtsGreensboro Receives $100,000 Grant from National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

The organization’s first NEA grant in over a decade will fund “Fabric of Freedom” during the National Folk Festival

"Greensboro, N.C., July 16, 2014 — The National Endowment for the Arts announced today that ArtsGreensboro has received a $100,000 “Our Town” grant for its Fabric of Freedom initiative, which will be presented in conjunction with the upcoming National Folk Festival.

ArtsGreensboro President and CEO Tom Philion said, “This is the first NEA grant ArtsGreensboro has received in more than a decade. We are delighted that the NEA has recognized Greensboro’s unique place in the history of our nation, and will help us celebrate that by funding the Fabric of Freedom project.”

A multidisciplinary arts festival within the National Folk Festival, The Fabric of Freedom will highlight Greensboro’s leadership role in Americans’ quest for freedom:

·      beginning with its Quaker roots and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in the 18^th century;

·      encompassing its emergence as a textile, transportation, and furniture center in the 19^th century;

·      honoring its role as the birthplace of the Sit-In Movement and as a Civil Right leader in the 20^th century; and

·      recognizing the city as a haven for immigrant and refugee populations in the 21^st century.

Performances and community activities addressing the issues of civil rights, equality, and freedom will take place at sites throughout Greensboro. Working with a host of partners including the National Council for Traditional Arts, the City of Greensboro, the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, Guilford College, and North Carolina A&T State University, ArtsGreensboro will invite performers and artists based on the Fabric of Freedom theme.

The NEA’s Our Town grants program provides a platform for diverse populations to engage in arts activities that help to define a future vision for their community. All Our Town grant awards are made to partnerships that include at least one nonprofit organization and a local government entity. Each of the recommended grants speaks to the role of arts practitioners and partners in building greater livability across a range of geographies and community types. Many communities have used these grants to support multi-partner, anchor investments in their communities' future.

Guilford College, New Garden Friends School Collaboration to Benefit Families at Both Institutions

"New Garden Friends School students will pay reduced tuition for courses at Guilford College, and the children of Guilford employees will receive a tuition discount at NGFS, under a new agreement between the two institutions.

NGFS, an independent school offering preschool through 12th grade, is guided by Quaker faith and practice. Guilford was founded by Quakers.

“This collaboration makes great sense for both of us,” said Guilford President Kent Chabotar. “Both schools are committed to the value and strength of Quaker education, and we are pooling resources to benefit our students. The diversity of both institutions will provide a wonderful opportunity for added dialogue and understanding in addition to promoting opportunities for Quaker education among our own faculty and staff.”

NGFS Head of School Ari Betof noted, “The roots of our school started with the inspiration of Bruce Stewart and Jim Newlin while they were at Guilford College. Through the years, Guilford College and NGFS have looked for opportunities to collaborate in ways that benefit both of our communities. This new agreement continues to build upon the strength of that partnership.”

NGFS juniors and seniors who qualify will be able to take courses at Guilford for college credit under a plan coordinated by the Office of the Academic Dean at Guilford. These classes will provide advanced subject matter and greater curricular depth while allowing students to receive dual credit. In addition to New Garden’s own rigorous curriculum, Guilford courses will help prepare NGFS students to succeed in a vibrant college learning environment.

There is also a joint commitment to encourage more NGFS graduates to enroll at Guilford, and to encourage more Guilford faculty and staff to explore the options for their children at New Garden.

The College already enrolls public high school students through The Early College at Guilford, which was established in 2002. In 2012, Guilford entered into an agreement with American Hebrew Academy that allows Hebrew Academy students to take courses at Guilford, and allows Guilford student-athletes to use the Hebrew Academy’s first-rate track and swimming facilities. New Garden students have taken courses at Guilford in recent years, but the new agreement will solidify this partnership.

Guilford faculty and staff will have the opportunity to apply for their students’ enrollment at New Garden at a reduced tuition rate. Guilford employees have often chosen NGFS as the best fit for their students. The new tuition structure will make New Garden even more attractive.

“Our hope is that this agreement makes an NGFS education even more accessible to Guilford College families,” said Betof, a Guilford alumnus. “As a Friends school with such close ties to Guilford, we want to ensure that an NGFS education is a viable opportunity for the children of all Guilford employees.”"

Guilford College Dean of Students Aaron Fetrow kept his promise today, jumping into the college's "lake" after the senior class reached 50 percent participation for its senior gift campaign. Students, faculty and staff packed the hill by the campus lake — which, I should add, has a reputation for being pretty disgusting — to watch Fetrow face-plant out of a row boat wearing a suit and then swim back to shore. Guilford College's WQFS to go off air for summer

In order to allow for renovations to Founders Hall, the main building on Guilford College's campus, WQFS 90.9 fm will go off air beginning April 18. A station representative said they plan to begin broadcasting again on August 20 to coincide with the beginning of the fall semester.

WQFS DJs are a mix of community members and students and normally cuts back broadcast hours during school breaks but maintains many shows and much of its broadcasting. The station is one of several college radio stations in Greensboro.

Guilford College students offered free financial literacy training

Guilford College plans to collaborate with online financial education company EverFi during the fall semester to offer financial literacy training. The program will be free to Guilford College students through the Career and Community Learning Office. A college press release states that EverFi uses “a game-based approach that includes new media and web technologies, such as 3-D gaming, animations, simulations, videos and Twitter-like applications to help students understand concepts including how to determine a credit card payment, planning to pay off student loans, shopping for insurance or attaining a mortgage loan.”

Homophobic bias incidents alleged at Guilford College

In an official release, the Guilford College administration says that a student received a note last week on his dorm room door stating "Die you MF fag. Nobody wants your kind on campus," followed a couple days later by an incident in which someone dropped a rock and a note through the student's open residence hall window. The note reportedly read, in part, "It's bad enough with out all the gay crap pulling people down. It's sick, unnatural, and death is almost too good for you."

The release, which is labeled "Bias Incident Information" on the college's Campus Life web page, states, "Clearly these messages are harassment in violation of numerous college policies and are criminal acts under state and federal law. The Greensboro Police Department is actively involved in the investigation of this matter and campus officials will cooperate with local authorities to ensure that those responsible will be held accountable both off campus and on campus."

The Guilford Peace Society and Guilford Pride are are organizing a vigil on campus that is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
